Herpes

A common virus that can result in fluid-filled blisters, commonly on the mouth or genitalia.

What is it?

Herpes is a widespread and highly contagious condition, marked by recurring episodes of small, painful fluid-filled blisters. These blisters are generally observed on or around the mouth or genitalia but can surface anywhere on the body. The root causes of herpes are two kinds of viruses: Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) mainly causing oral herpes, and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2) chiefly responsible for genital herpes. Many individuals with the virus don't show symptoms, which is why it's frequently spread unknowingly. Although there's no comprehensive cure for herpes, the condition can be controlled, and the reoccurrences can become less intense and less regular over time.

How is it treated?

Upon verifying a diagnosis, providers at Mountain State Dermatology can prescribe antiviral drugs to help control outbreaks, reduce the chances of transmission and lessen the severity and duration of the symptoms. They may also suggest changes in lifestyle habits that can trigger flare-ups, like stress and insufficient sleep. We can also offer helpful education on how to prevent passing herpes to others. With the right strategy and management, people with herpes can return to life as usual.

If you need help controlling herpes, schedule an exam at one of our offices in Bridgeport, Clarksburg, Elkins, Hurricane, Morgantown, Parkersburg, South Charleston and Wheeling, West Virginia; in Waynesburg and Uniontown, Pennsylvania or in Marietta, Ohio.
